Fragmentation of anthracene C14H10, acridine C13H9N and phenazine C12H8N2 ions in collisions with atoms

2014

International audience; We report experimental total, absolute, fragmentation cross sections for anthracene C14H10, acridine C13H9N, and phenazine C12H8N2 ions colliding with He at center-of-mass energies close to 100 eV. In addition, we report results for the same ions colliding with Ne, Ar, and Xe at higher energies. The total fragmentation cross sections for these three ions are the same within error bars for a given target. The measured fragment mass distributions reveal significant contributions from both delayed (≫10−12 s) statistical fragmentation processes as well as non-statistical, prompt (∼10−15 s), single atom knockout processes. The latter dominate and are often followed by sec…

RadioAstron reveals a spine-sheath jet structure in 3C 273

2021

We present Space-VLBI RadioAstron observations at 1.6 GHz and 4.8 GHz of the flat spectrum radio quasar 3C 273, with detections on baselines up to 4.5 and 3.3 Earth Diameters, respectively. Achieving the best angular resolution at 1.6 GHz to date, we have imaged limb-brightening in the jet, not previously detected in this source. In contrast, at 4.8 GHz, we detected emission from a central stream of plasma, with a spatial distribution complementary to the limb-brightened emission, indicating an origin in the spine of the jet. While a stratification across the jet width in the flow density, internal energy, magnetic field, or bulk flow velocity are usually invoked to explain the limb-brighte…

Growth of Domains and Scaling in the Late Stages of Phase Separation and Diffusion-Controlled Ordering Phenomena

1991

These lectures consider the kinetics of phase changes, induced by a sudden change of external thermodynamic parameters. E.g., we treat a system with a second-order transition at a critical temperature Tc (Fig. 1, left part). For T0 > Tc the system is disordered, while for T < Tc there is an order parameter ± ψ (implying one-component orderings, e.g., an Ising model; later we discuss generalizations). We consider a “quenching experiment”: The system is brought from an initially disordered state at T0 to a state at T where in equilibrium the system should be orderedl. Since no sign of ψ is preferred, the system starts forming locally ordered regions of either sign, separated by domain walls. …

Stress gradient versus strain gradient constitutive models within elasticity

2014

Abstract A stress gradient elasticity theory is developed which is based on the Eringen method to address nonlocal elasticity by means of differential equations. By suitable thermodynamics arguments (involving the free enthalpy instead of the free internal energy), the restrictions on the related constitutive equations are determined, which include the well-known Eringen stress gradient constitutive equations, as well as the associated (so far uncertain) boundary conditions. The proposed theory exhibits complementary characters with respect to the analogous strain gradient elasticity theory. The associated boundary-value problem is shown to admit a unique solution characterized by a Helling…

Density as a constraint and the separation of internal excitation energy in TDHF

1985

We present a fast and efficient constrained Hartree-Fock iteration scheme which constraints the complete density distribution to remain constant. The scheme is particularly suited to a coordinate- or momentum-space representation. The technique is applied to separate the collective and the internal energy in a propagating TDHF state. We study the behavior of these two energies in an16O+16O collision.

Free-surface flows solved by means of SPH schemes with numerical diffusive terms

2010

A novel system of equations has been defined which contains diffusive terms in both the continuity and energy equations and, at the leading order, coincides with a standard weakly-compressible SPH scheme with artificial viscosity. A proper state equation is used to associate the internal energy variation to the pressure field and to increase the speed of sound when strong deformations/compressions of the fluid occur. The increase of the sound speed is associated to the shortening of the time integration step and, therefore, allows a larger accuracy during both breaking and impact events. Moreover, the diffusive terms allows reducing the high frequency numerical acoustic noise and smoothing …

The study and optimization of the behavior and energy absorbed in the frontal impact by a rectangular metal workpiece with an Origami core

2021

The bumper systems (beams and face bars) are parts of the car body structure, one of the most important components of an auto vehicle because of its role in absorbing the energy of an impact by deformation. The main objective of this paper is to study, optimize the built shape of the frontal members beams used in the endurance structure of motor vehicles in terms of their ability to absorb internal energy resulting from a frontal impact under the principles of sustainability. The study combines the classical technology used in the construction of vehicles with, the Origami Engineering” technique, which is generally used by NASA, but also by engineers in other fields: aeronautics, nanotechno…

Thermal Diffusion and Partial Molar Enthalpy Variations of n-Butane in Silicalite-1

2008

International audience; We report for the first time the heat of transfer and the Soret coefficient for n-butane in silicalite-1. The heat of transfer was typically 10 kJ/mol. The Soret coefficient was typically 0.006 K−1 at 360 K. Both varied with the temperature and the concentration. The thermal conductivity of the crystal with butane adsorbed was 1.46 ±0.07 W/Km. Literature values of the isosteric enthalpy of adsorption, the concentration at saturation, and the diffusion coefficients were reproduced. Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations were used to find these results, and a modified heat exchange algorithm, Soft-HEX, was developed for the purpose. Enthalpies of butane were al…

Nonlinear extended thermodynamics of a dilute nonviscous gas

2002

This paper deals with further developments of a nonlinear theory for a nonviscous gas in the presence of heat flux, which has been proposed in previous papers, using extended thermodynamics. The fundamental fields used are the density, the velocity, the internal energy density, and the heat flux. Using the Liu procedure, the constitutive theory is built up without approximations and the consistence of the model is showed: it is shown that the model is determined by the choice of three scalar functions which must satisfy a system of partial differential equations, which always has solutions. Different changes of field variables are carried out, using different Legendre transformations, passi…

Stability of hydrodynamical relativistic planar jets

2004

The effects of relativistic dynamics and thermodynamics in the development of Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in planar, relativistic jets along the early phases (namely linear and saturation phases) of evolution has been studied by a combination of linear stability analysis and high-resolution numerical simulations for the most unstable first reflection modes in the temporal approach. Three different values of the jet Lorentz factor (5, 10 and 20) and a few different values of specific internal energy of the jet matter (from 0.08 to $60.0 c^2$) have been considered. Figures illustrating the evolution of the perturbations are also shown.
